Welcome to scatteringashes.org. Since Ashes on the Sea began in 1997, we have received many questions about cremation, burial at sea, the scattering of ashes in lakes, streams, mountains and hills. We hope that this website will help to answer many of these questions!
Let us start by saying that each State has its own regulations regarding where you can and cannot dispose of human remains. State laws vary GREATLY, with California usually coming in first as the most strict, even enumerating minute details of cremains dispositions. The Environmental Protection Agency, or EPA, also has its own laws and these can differ among the ten regions of the EPA. These laws and regulations may change over time.
That being said, while attempts will be made on this website to include as many situations as possible, and to stay current with changes in laws, please remember to check with the EPA as well as your local state agency regarding your specific inquiry before going through with yourplans. A list of agencies and contact information will be made on this website as soon as possible.

Thank you for visiting. We hope to receive your feedback & suggestions!
